A MSC container ship engaged the pirates

    A ship bound for Nigeria's Port Harcout was attacked by pirates 75 nautical miles southwest of the Port of Bonny in Gulf of Guinea waters on the morning of Jan. 21, local time, the World Maritime News reported.

    Accurate information on the ship has not yet been confirmed but judging by the time and location, the only ship eligible is the MSC GRACE, a container ship owned by MSC shipping.

    It is understood that the attack occurred, a white flag and carrying 15 armed pirates of the black yacht opened fire on the ship. It was later confirmed that an armed security team attached to the container ship had fired back at the pirates during the attack, eventually repelling them.

    According to the data, the MSC GRACE is a branch ship with a carrying capacity of 1033 TEU, with a length of 155 meters and a width of 23 meters, built in 1991 and flying the Panamanian flag. The ship has been operating on the Gulf of Guinea route and is therefore equipped with armed guards.

    As of China Standard Time, the ship was at anchor in a port in southeastern Nigeria.
