Gulf of Guinea has overtaken Somalia as the world's most dangerous sea

    Recently, the International Maritime Bureau released the 2019 global piracy report.

    The report said there were 162 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships worldwide in 2019, compared with 201 in 2018, indicating an overall decline in the number of pirate attacks but an increase in the number of cases in Gulf of Guinea waters.

    The figures show that 121 crew members were kidnapped off the coast of Gulf of Guinea in 2019, compared with 78 in 2018, accounting for more than 90 percent of global maritime kidnappings. In the fourth quarter of 2019 alone, 64 crew members were abducted in six separate pirate attacks.
