Hapag-Lloyd is a German container shipping company engaged in transportation and logistics, headquartered in Hamburg. It was founded in 1970 as a merger of two companies that had been in business since the 19th century: 1847, founded by herb, and 1856, founded by Rots. Hapag-Lloyd was acquired by TUI in 1998 and became a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2002. TUI sold its majority stake to private investors in 2009.

On December 16, 2014, Hapag-Lloyd merged with Chile's South American Steamship Company to become the fourth largest shipping company in the world.
